1883: Heavy snow showers carried on a stiff northeast breeze bring disruption to Ulster and the east coast. Sailings to Britain are cancelled due to strong winds.
1896: Strong gale force north-westerly winds and heavy sleet snow showers impact Ireland. The shipping vessel (Palrac) is wrecked off the coast of Booterstown Strand in Dublin.
1955: Strong easterly winds bring bitterly cold winds and snowfall to eastern counties.
1969: NASA announces that 100 personnel from its Manned Space Centre in Houston, Texas, will establish a base at Shannon Airport from where they will conduct oceanographic work, including the checking of wave heights, temperature and wind velocities.
1972: A deep Atlantic depression brings strong winds and heavy rainfall leading to flooding in parts of Ireland.
1990: The EC grants Ireland £153,000 in disaster relief following two storms in February which killed two people and caused damage to seafronts in the south and west of Ireland.
2001: Ten fishermen are rescued and six bodies are recovered from the sea 200 miles northwest of Malin Head after a Spanish trawler sank in storm conditions.
2014: Parts of extensive forests dating back 7,500 years that once marked Ireland’s Atlantic rim are exposed by a sequence of storms hitting the west coast.
2018: The last remaining schools still closed since Storm Emma reopen in County Wexford.
