Weather conditions on this day down through Irish history.

1916: Temperatures drop to low single figures by day and subzero overnight as a prolonged cold spell takes hold. 

1923: Astronomer and former curate at the Armagh Observatory, Sir Patrick Moore is born.

1944: A bitterly cold northerly airflow brings snowfall to north Connacht, Ulster and east Leinster. 

1947: The last notable snowfall of the Big Freeze impacts the southern half of Ireland. Attempts to reach people trapped in snow in County Wicklow continue until March 8th. 

1982: 20,000 homes in the northwest remain without power following a storm that brought sustained hurricane force winds of 124 kmh to Malin Head, County Donegal.
