Weather conditions on this day down through Irish history.

1902: A sustained period of heavy rain causes river flooding along the Shannon in County Clare.

1931: A meeting of Wexford County Council hears calls for immediate flood defence works to be carried out in Rosslare which suffered extensive coastal erosion during a storm the previous week.

1960: ‘The City of Dublin’, a French-bound Irish vessel carrying 120 horses, is stormbound along the coast of Cornwall. One horse dies in transit.

1967: Heavy snow impacts north Munster, Connacht and Donegal.

1982: Heavy snow leads to travel disruption in the northwest and the Midlands. 

2001: A rescue operation to save the lives of over 60 of the famous Claddagh swans gets underway in Galway City after an oil slick surrounds the birds. The incident occurs two weeks after four swans are killed in another oil spill.

2008: Strong westerly winds lead to coastal flooding along the Atlantic seaboard. 

2015: Flooding is reported in some counties following heavy rainfall.

2016: In what is an exceptionally sunny month in Ireland’s northwest, Knock Airport in Co Mayo records 11.1 hours sunshine on this day, the month's highest daily sunshine total.
