Thunderstorms cause power outages in the west

Lightning from thunderstorm activity in western counties knocked out power to homes and business premises in West Clare and West Limerick on Monday morning.

A cloud to ground lightning strike was recorded outside Kilkee shortly before 11am leading to extensive blackouts in the Clare seaside town.

Lightning in west Limerick also led to power outages for 114 premises in the Glin and Loughill areas of the county.

A separate cloud to surface strike was recorded one kilometre offshore of Achill Island in County Mayo but no disruption to electricity network has been reported here.

Heavy showers will continue to move east across Ireland during Monday afternoon.
