On This Day (February 17th) in Irish Weather History

Weather conditions on this day down through Irish history.

1947: The Big Freeze continues as bitterly cold easterly winds prevent temperatures from rising above freezing during the day.

1955: Strong northeast gales carry heavy snow showers across Ulster, north Connacht and Leinster.

1963: Weak frontal features near the south and south-west coasts bring sleet and snow as bitterly cold and strong, east to south-east winds continue during the Big Freeze.  The average minimum temperature in Ireland is -2.0c.

1969: Snowfall is recorded in many parts as temperatures drop to below freezing during an 11-day cold spell in Ireland and Britain.

1971: An RTÉ Newsbeat report from Lahinch Golf Club in County Clare details the story of two friendly goats who act as weather guides for golfers.

2003: Strong winds force the famine replica ship, the Jeanie Johnston, to drop anchor close to Valentia, 20 hours into her 21-day voyage to Tenerife. The weather also leads to Aer Lingus cancelling flights to New York.
