On This Day (24 February) in Irish Weather History

Weather conditions on this day down through Irish history.

1841: John Philip Holland, inventor and developer of the modern submarine, is born in Liscannor, County Clare.

1926: The Irish Times reports of ongoing erosion effects of winter storms on the Irish coastline from Dublin Bay to Cork Harbour. The paper reports: "From the evidence of its (south-easterly gales) effects along the Southern coast there arose one time a popular theory that Ireland was gradually tilting - rising in the North, falling in the South."

1947: Due to food shortages brought about because of prolonged cold weather, Minister of Industry and Commerce Seán Lemass issues an emergency rationing system. The distress is further compounded by fuel shortages, caused by limited coal supplies due to similar Arctic conditions in Britain.

1986 - Daytime temperatures struggle to rise above freezing amid a cold snap that brings snow to the east and south.
