A sizeable magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck at 1.24pm in Lisbon, Portugal today.
The quake was measured at an estimated depth of 10km, approximately 3 km south of Charneca de Caparica and was felt across a wide area based on posts to X.
Unlike the recent quake in The Cayman Islands, this one was not picked up by the INSN seismographs.
The southwestern tip of Portugal is located close to a 50-km-long (31 mi) thrust fault.
The last big earthquake event to hit Portugal's capital city took place in 1755. A series of major earthquakes caused serious damage to the port city and killed an estimated 60,000 people in Lisbon alone.
The earthquake produced a 2-metre tsunami that hit the south and west coasts of Ireland. The Spanish Arch section of the city walls of Galway were damaged.
