January was colder and drier than average in Ireland

Based on analysis of weather data for January 2025 from 13 official Met Éireann synoptic stations, the month was colder and drier than average.

It was a case of the Soggy Southeast with both Oak Park (Carlow) and Johnstown (Wexford) recording higher rainfall than their climatological long-term-average (LTA) reference period 1981-2010. It was drier than normal for the month further west and north.

Of the 13 stations, only Malin Head in Donegal recorded a warmer month when compared to its LTA.

The month will be remembered for heavy snowfall across the Midlands and parts of Munster on Jnauary 3rd, as well as Storm Éowyn on January 24th, the effects of which continue to be felt today in rural communities.
