More than 450 lightning strikes have been reported across West Munster on Thursday morning leading to power outages in counties Clare and Kerry.
Scattered heavy thunderstorms are moving into the province and are producing heavy rain with some hail.
Power outages are occurring in the affected counties with in excess of 500 premises suffering loss of electricity according to the ESB Powercheck website.
Further scattered heavy showers with thunder are expected in the wind later this morning and early afternoon.
The heavy showers that brought thunder and lightning to parts of the west this morning are now impacting the east coast.
Showers will become well scattered by Thursday evening as drier and brighter weather extends across the country from the southwest.
