Cloud to ground lightning strike in County Cork

There has been plenty of thunderstorm activity across Ireland over the past 36 hours, with heavy rain eventually giving way to brighter weather on Friday afternoon.

A cloud to surface lightning strike was recorded in the early hours of this morning close to Barry's Point in County Cork.

The lightning strike (-213kA), described as a ‘Wild House shaker’, occurred shortly before 1am as a warm front brought heavy rain across Ireland from the southwest.

The remainder of Friday and all of Saturday will be largely dry with good sunny spells developing ahead of wet and windy weather on Sunday.

Gusts of over 100km/h are expected during Sunday with Status Yellow wind and rain warnings in effect for 23 counties.
