1917: A man dies of hypothermia during heavy snowfall in Swinford, County Mayo, reports The Irish Times. The newspaper reports that the man "perished in a heavy drift".

1953 - In stormy conditions, the Princess Victoria, a British Railways car ferry steamer, bound for Larne sinks in the Irish Sea claiming the lives of 128 passengers and crew. Among the passengers who perish are the Northern Ireland Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Major J. M. Sinclair, and Sir Walter Smiles, the Ulster Unionist MP for North Down.


1972: A Railway Cup hurling clash is abandoned after 13 minutes at Croke Park due to heavy snow.

1983: Severe weather conditions result in a television blackout across Dublin and Wicklow as RTE 1 and 2 went off air. Icy conditions and strong winds delayed the restoration of power to the Three Rock Mountain transmitting station.

1999: A landmark moment for Irish maritime history when manually operated morse code radio services end after over 100 years.
