1848: A 16-day severe cold spell culminates with heavy snowfall as an Atlantic system meets entrenched cold that has become established over Ireland for much of January.

1917: The Irish Times publishes a report on a snowstorm that has "visited the greater part of the South and West of Ireland" leaving thousands snowbound. Daytime temperatures stay close to freezing across Ireland.

1963: A brief, mild lull in the Big Freeze of 1963 begins. Minister for Transport and Power, Erskine Childers says he has been informed by the "Electricity Supply Board that while their generating capacity has been taxed to the utmost, the danger of power cuts is now receding with the change in the weather."
